Artist's Comments

A fun piece where I got to draw a moped in a city. definitely learned some stuff from this piece. Mopeds are pretty fun to draw, especially when they're jumping a staircase ;)

BTW, why is there a ridiculous amount of options to choose from for the categories? They need to be WAY simplified.

Would you like a critique on this one?

critiques are great... I can't make any promises that I'll make any changes, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for next time.

Overall you've done a good job of creating a sense of motion and chaos in the piece. The centre of focus (the moped careening down the stairwell) could have been placed better; there isn't much interaction between it and the rest of the frame. (The policeman at the bottom right looks like more of an afterthought than a deliberate placement in the composition. Perhaps making him larger would have increased his visual presence and made him more important; and would have provided the balance needed to offset the bright red moped in a predominantly cool composition).

Placing the sign so close to the moped also moves the visual weight of the piece higher, with nothing to really ground it. Even though I can see you were going for a sort of "unbalanced" look in the piece, organizing the elements a little better would have definitely helped. The eye tends to start viewing a piece from the bottom right, and the first thing it sees in this piece is the briefcase of a man leaving the picture plane; it doesn't really have any place to go. The sign could have been used as a device to help direct the viewer through the composition.

It's also worth noting that the trees on the right side of the picture are slanted. Even though tree trunks are never perfectly vertical, having all of them slant in the same direction looks a bit awkward.

Sorry if I rambled a bit. I hope this was helpful.

spot on critique man, particularly about afterthoughts hehe. There was some pretty big "surgery" to this piece along the way, and you definitely picked up on about everything that I went through and re-arranged.

Where have you been hiding all this time? I needed (and still need lol) your input years ago! :D

I was too busy making shitty artwork.

If you ever need another critique, feel free to ask.

an art test I recently had for a job I've been trying to get. I did a couple other pieces for the test, but this was my favorite and was easily modifiable to make into just an image from what it was intended for (a game intro screen).

No word on if I got it yet though, still have my fingers crossed, and have had them crossed for a long time heh.

Some kind of concept art job or what? We talking a regular, full time gig? 9-5?

yeah, supposedly going to hear this week if I get it, and all the interviews have been positive, but you never know. The guy I've been talking to is sometimes hard to pin down, but I'm sure that's how it is when you're in a management position at a company.

I'm just excited about the possibility of a cross country move... go and live some place that I'm totally out of my element in lol
